Our Kindergarten Program

The International Kindergarten welcomes children from a variety of backgrounds. We currently have children enrolled from both the local Danish community and the wider international community.

Children in the kindergarten are typically between 3 years and 1 month and 6 years of age (exceptions may occur), and English is the primary language of instruction.

We follow Sønderborg Municipality’s Study Goals:

  • Communication and Language
  • Social and Personal Development
  • Body, Senses and Movement
  • Culture and Community
  • Nature, Outdoor Life and Science
  • Overall Personal Development

and The Cambridge Early Years Program:

Some children speak English fluently, while others join us with little or no English language skills. All children are supported in developing their language abilities, as well as other key skills, regardless of their age or level upon entry. Every child in the kindergarten receives a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy.

Play is at the heart of children's development in our kindergarten. Children are encouraged and given ample time to interact socially and learn through play. We support children's development through Slow Pedagogy—an educational philosophy that emphasises unhurried, child-led learning.

We recognise the importance of:

  • Life capability – developing the skills and confidence needed to manage everyday life.
  • Learning – acquiring knowledge and developing abilities.
  • Care – providing support, kindness, and emotional security.

These three concepts are closely connected and are central to Danish early childhood education and care.
